Reishi Mushroom Latte

Now that the holiday dust has settled, its nice to indulge in some much needed downtime. Although now getting some time to rest, I find my self feeling a little run down. To help recover, my go to drink these last few days it a tea latte starring reishi mushrooms.

Reishi is revered in Traditional Chinese Medicine as the mushroom of immortality. It can be found growing on dead or dying eastern and western hemlock trees. It is a woody, hard and bitter mushroom that has been used in herbal medicine, dating back to 200 BC.

There are several reasons why I love adding reishi into my diet, but here are my top 3.

  1. There have been multiple studies done using reishi that found that regular consumption may indeed help fight against cancer cells, as well as reduce the side effects from chemotherapy.

  2. There have been many studies done looking at reishi and its ability to increase the production of T-cells, supporting your immune system.

  3. It’s anti-inflammatory properties have been shown to help reduce allergic rhinitis when taken regularly.

As with any herb, you should discuss reishi with your healthcare provider prior to taking medicinally. In the meantime, sipping on this delicious tea won’t disappoint.

Steeping Reishi

I start by steeping my own reishi, but you can purchase in powder form if you’d prefer. I really like products Four Sigmatic mushroom blends.

if you do want to try your hand at steeping reishi, its pretty simple. I buy certified organic Ganoderma lucidum from Mountain Rose Herbs, in slices.

To steep, I break about 8 grams of dried reishi (2 large pieces) steeped for 2 hours in 8 cups of filtered water.

Once you strain the pieces out, your tea is ready to drink.
